Volunteering with MAMA at Tamale Teaching Hospital (medical background may be required).

Volunteer opportunities include working within the:

o Labor and Maternity Ward
o Assisting both contemporary physicians and tradition mid-wives
o Pediatric Ward
o Helping in the day care of young Ghanaian toddlers
o Gynecology and Obstetric Ward
o Women’s Health assistant
o Operating/Surgical Theaters
o Orthopedic
o Anesthesiology
o Outpatient Department (OPD)
- First point of contact – Check-in/vitals
- Blood Pressure, weight, insurance, etc.
- Patient Checkout
o Pharmacy / Pharmacy assistant
o Medical Emergency Department
o Hematology, Pathology, Bacteriology, Cytology, & Blood Bank Departments
o X-Ray
o Assisting in the activities of the Ghana Federation of Traditional Medical Practioners (GHAFTRAM) and assist AIDS patients.

Volunteering at the University of Development Studies (founded Sept. 1993, the largest faulty of agriculture in Ghana). Participate in collaborative research, student exchange research, community facilitation & Intervention within the:
o Dept. of Agronomy – Dept. Head Israel Dzomeku Ph.D
o Dept. of Animal Science – Dept. Head G. Ayum Teye Ph.D.
o Dept. of Horticulture – Dept Head Mr. Hypolite Bayor

o Tuition (exchange of lectures). Minimal qualifications of lectures must have Masters in field

Outside of MAMA’s 3 PAF programs are a wealth of engaging and active volunteer opportunities and include:
• Teaching and/or assisting at the Taimako Business College (age: 15-22 years).
• Teach young people basic computer literacy and Internet skills at Technocef, a private institution in Tamale.
• Care for orphaned children at the Anfaani Tamale Children Home
• Co-op in the mango arboricultural Agrovet/Taimako Farms and Nurseries (only in the summer). Grow, seed, plant, graft trees, fruits, and much more.
• Serve an apprenticeship with a traditional healer.
• Join excursions and visits with a local guide to people of unique and mystic professions.

Experience these volunteer opportunities while living in traditional Ghanaian villages or compounds and actively participating in Traditional Ghanaian Daily Activities.

 

Volunteer with MAMA And The People
of Ghana

The most innovative aspect of MAMA programs rests in the scope and range of MAMA Volunteer. Volunteer possibilities (minimum of one month in Tamale) consist of 3 Principal Areas of Focus (PAF) programs and numerous other volunteer opportunities. MAMA Volunteer Opportunities include:

Volunteering with MAMA and the Ghana Education Service, Tamale Metropolitan Education Directorate- The Ghana Education Service was founded just after the Second World War. There are 138 districts in the country, and each has between fifty (50) and one hundred (100) schools. In total there are:

184 - Pre Schools
80 - Junior Secondary Schools
236 - Primary Schools
10 - Senior Secondary Schools
1 - Vocational/Technical School

The organization employs both professional and non-professional to educate pupils, students and teachers-in-training. The Tamale Metropolitan Directorate supervises all pre Tertiary Educational Institutions, teachers and other staff in the Metropolis.
Ghana Education Service consists of six Departments. These six departments see to the day-to-day activities and efficient functioning of Ghana Education Services and include:

MAMA Volunteers are welcome within the Ghana Education Service to effectively contribute in an administrative capacity and in the classroom of both basic and senior secondary schools teaching Science, Mathematics, and English in conjunction with Japan International Co-operation Assistance (JICA) and other volunteers.
