Why M.A.M.A Is Special

The Ghanaian delegates, businesses, government bodies, educational institutions, chiefs, and families with whom we have contact are not only those who live in the cities; but also those who MAMA considers to be, without question, the wealthiest…the real jewels, the people from the local villages who have preserved the timeless African traditions, customs and culture. This allows for the amazing possibility of exposure to indigenous knowledge and experiences that western societies normally do not have access too and cannot duplicate. Naturally this scope includes, but extends well beyond tourism to include complete submersion into the rich Ghanaian culture.

MAMA is a fully functional charitable 501(c) (3) organization created as an evidence-based solution to address and reverse the negative psychological effects of poor racial identity. Our solution-oriented programs like the Indigenous Knowledge Study (i.e. indigenous apprenticeship), MAMA Education Network (i.e. awareness campaign on the existence and benefit of African Centered School Systems), and MAMA Volunteer (i.e. schools, hospitals, universities) or initiatives specifically designed to protect and enhance African identity, culture, and pride. The time and environment is ideal for the genesis of a realistic model designed for the African American community to develop a real appreciation and knowledge of its own culture. MAMA is positioned to fill the cultural void within our communities and replace it with healthy confidence and strong sense of culture, values, identity and self-appreciation.

MAMA Indigenous Knowledge Study and MAMA Volunteer creates opportunities to meet and live with the local people of Northern Ghana. You can do voluntary or participate in the indigenous knowledge study for one or more months with a local family in a Northern Ghanaian community. MAMA is designed to be flexible in order to help you choose what works best for you and to tailor your experience in Ghana and the duration of it (from a couple weeks until a year) to your liking. Come share in MAMA Indigenous Knowledge and MAMA Volunteer for a couple of months during summer break after college finals, give the gift of exposure and experience to your graduating high school senior. The choice is yours and the options are limitless.

MAMA Education Network is a powerful resource for parents concerned about the quality of American public education. The parents we assist are those looking for a more challenging educational experience, nurturing environment, and greater emphasis on African and African American culture and history for their children. Our small network of African Centered School Systems (ACSS) blend and balance excellence in education with African and African American cultural prominence where racial identity and self-esteem are not compromised for improved academics. African Centered School Systems apply what empirical research suggests, and that is racial identity serves as a buffer against the factors that place African American families more specifically African American youth at risk for mental health problems. ACSS understand that parents and focus groups alike want not only higher teacher expectations and academic standards, more individual attention, assurances of their children’s safety, but a well-rounded education that includes African and African American values that reinforce a strong sense of self-esteem, self-love, and mutual respect.

The money paid for board and lodging will go to a poorer part of the population. This creates a win-win, particularly for Americans as we work to broaden our understanding and expand the scope of our cultural appreciation.
Our small scale also allows us to offer relatively low fees with a very personal touch. We are very hands on. MAMA Indigenous Knowledge and MAMA Volunteer hosts preparatory workshops before your trip to prepare you for your stay in Ghana. Our workshops teach you about the culture, customs, and traditions and relay to you practical information in our preparation classes.

The support MAMA offers is very personal, comprehensive, and dedicated to making sure each guest feels at ease. The assistance we offer in America and Ghana is both extensive and time specific. We are readily available during the pre-planning phases and in Ghana to address questions and available to assist resolving any problems.

MAMA advocates that submersion into African culture will have positive, life altering impact on the lives of all participants. This anecdotal truth is why we don’t aim to send people abroad to “help” the Ghanaian people, but instead send them to reconnect with
a very rich and healthy African culture. Ghana is one of the friendliest and safest countries in Africa. All formally schooled persons speak English. Traditional healthcare and religion are in full practice. Festivals and celebrations are accompanied by talking drums. Traditional West African culture is fascinating and still very much alive.

For those of us who are not as adventurous and prepared for travel to Ghana… yet! You all might still leverage our website as a resource to gain detailed information on the traditional culture, religion, and medicines of Northern Ghana. Come and join us
